Hacking sky nds cards

Caiazza made a series of frantic calls to Rossi after the raid, telling Rossi that police had found only two smartcards. So who cares? Caiazza told Rossi that he did not do this for business, and that while police might find some hacking files for Seca 2 he had written, he would say he had received it from someone else.

The police investigation lasted about 18 months, but it was not until February that prosecutors laid piracy charges against Caiazza, Rossi, a police officer and 23 others. Certainly I did never encourage him to make any business from piracy or to violate any conditional access system.

In the past, NDS has notched up an impressive list of legal victories against its accusers. Only one case, by Echostar, went to trial. The Italian case went to trial in Siracusa in May this year. But under the Italian court system, the complex case is being heard only one day a month. It is in the interests of the 26 defendants to spin proceedings out, because by the middle of next year, many of the charges will be beyond the statute of limitations and the charges may be dropped.

Meanwhile it remains to be seen what will emerge when the mountain of police phone-tap transcripts is released on the public record. Skip to navigation Skip to content Skip to footer Help using this website - Accessibility statement.

Photo: AP AFR The claim involves corporate espionage rather than invasions of privacy and comes as Rupert Murdoch hinted he would not be succeeded by his son James, News International chairman, under whose watch the phone hacking occurred.

He added that although Thoic was in his name, in reality the website belonged to NDS. It was their baby and it started to become more their baby as they fashioned it to their own design. Once ITV Digital's codes were published on Thoic, Mr Gibling said his site was then used to defeat the electronic countermeasures that the company used to try to stop the piracy. He added that new codes, created by ITV Digital, were sent out to other piracy websites. We wanted them to stay and keep with On Digital, flogging it until it broke.

But the satellite broadcaster, chaired by James Murdoch, told the programme it had no involvement in how the unit was run and was not aware of Thoic. Mr Murdoch was a non-executive director of NDS at the time although there is no evidence that he knew about the events reported by Panorama. Foxtel uses Irdeto 5 CAMs. And the security of the decryption key? Not so good. Just like hiding it inside a very thin brick. If hackers can open up the card and get to the key, they can extract the key and use it to make cloned cards.

This leads us to the secrecy of the hardware. Four years ago, Wired magazine posted a YouTube video see below showing Chris Tarnovsky demonstrating how to extract the chip from a smartcard, and access the electrical signals. Reprogramming the card to display its stored data including the decryption key is the next step. Modern cards are better, but the techniques for getting into them are also better. Many digital TV watchers use techniques such as card sharing or internet key sharing to spread the cost of a Pay-TV subscription among tens or hundreds of people.

This was preceded in by a case in which Vivendi and EchoStar accused NDS of illegally extracting the code from smartcards used to unscramble satellite TV signals.

The case has raised more question marks over the corporate practice of News Corp and James Murdoch, the current chairman of Sky, who has faced criticism over his handling of the phone hacking crisis at newspaper publisher, News International. Murdoch was a non-executive director of NDS at the time of the alleged wrongdoing, but there is no evidence to suggest he was aware of the malpractice. Ofcom is currently investigating whether Murdoch and News Corp are "fit and proper" to remain in control of Sky.

The regulator has warned that it could revoke Sky's TV licence in the UK if it finds sufficient cause for concern.
