Have a good one, Alan Mintaka. Answers inline It's not the clock speed it's the instruction set on the processor. You would be better buying a new or newer second hand system with Windows 7 preinstalled or a newer second hand system an install Windows 7 yourself. Factor in the cost of the upgrade license and the DVD Drive also.
A new machine or newer second hand machine with Windows 7 installed is again recommended. However if you are installing Windows 7 on this model use the 32 Bit version. You will find some detail about the power supply in the Technical Overview and the Removing and Installing Parts section has some clues about installing drives.
When you look for the data cable you should be aware that they are made in straight and 90 deg angle varieties. Check out where you plan to install the drive before purchasing the cable. Some chassis must have the 90 deg connector, while others work well with the straight plugs.
It's been almost 2 yrs since this was posted. System has operated without a problem for the past 2 years and just about everything I needed to work that was installed with Windows XP works! Hope this thread helps others that kept their old system. I think the Dimension was one of the few computers that Dell produced that really can be updated. Biggest limitations may be the IBM processor and the motherboard. By the way Dell originally told me that this computer would not work with Windows 7.
View solution in original post. Dell does not test systems this old for Windows 7 compatability. They do not "support" it which means it is up to you to get it to work without Dell supplying drivers , but that doesn't mean it won't work. The best place to start on a system that is not supported by its manufacturer is the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Guess I'm saying that I did test the system with the upgrades recommended by the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and the upgrades work.
Would like to know if anyone in the community has attempted to install a USB upgrade on this computer. That's good that you got it going - and others will appreciate the feedback. When it is unsupported, sometimes the only way to know for sure is to go for it. Some are unwilling to do that and they wait to see if someone else will. USB 3.
