Batman war games act 1 review

This comic makes me wonder why anyone would stay in Gotham City when so many tragic things have happened. This all starts when someone tries to do the right thing but it goes pear shaped and completely out of control. Gotham pays the price and you see the strain that puts on Batman and co.

This comic opens a wh When they say it's all out war, they mean an all out war! This comic opens a whole new mess and I am anxiously awaiting to see what happens next.

Act 1 of this arc is an action-packed opener as Batman and co try to stop a gang war in Gotham. Jan 24, Chris Walker rated it liked it Shelves: superhero-comics. Eh, a decent enough beginning to a Batman arc, as far as they go. The first issue sets up the story and all of the key players while the subsequent issues tackle the enormous fallout. The pace is pretty relentless, which is at times thrilling and at other times exhausting and sometimes downright confusing.

There are a lot of mob factions at work in this story, and they're not differentiated much beyond their ethnic identity Sicilian and Russian mafia, Yakuza, Unified Latinos, etc. The writing is pretty bland and unremarkable aside from Ed Brubaker's work with Catwoman. He's the only writer who really lets off the gas long enough for his characters to have actual conversations with one another with tea, even!

The art is similarly decent with the exception of Giuseppe Camuncolo's work on the one issue of Robin, which I really didn't care for. Honestly, I was hoping for a bit more from this volume, but it didn't deliver in the way that I wanted. The story moves at a breakneck pace, but it lacks the depth and desperation that made the similarly frenetic Knightfall story arc so gripping. I will still probably pick up Act 2 to see if the story settles down and evens out. Jan 28, Kathleen rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction , comics , read-in So much happens here.

Spoiler is rash, brash, and just a little boring. Barbara is frustrated by Batman treating Oracle like a secretary. Nightwing is dealing with Blockbuster's death. Cameo from Tarantula is fun. Tim, having stopped being Robin, finds that his school can still be taken over by gang members trying to off the daughter of a mafia boss. And the entire bat-family goes without discussion. Let me say that last bit again, in case you don't understand how momentous that is. Gotham is des So much happens here.

Gotham is descending into a complete reign of terror. Gang violence has erupted everywhere--all Spoiler's fault, but more on that later--and instead of putting out those fires Batman, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Oracle all focus entirely on helping Tim.

When you're a Bat, you're a Bat all the way, from your first batarang to your last dying day. Apr 21, Koen rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. Wow, you can seriously say this one is action-packed! Sometimes a bit confusing and a bit much.. There are so many characters in play that you really need to keep your head in the game. But despite the overhead, it's been building up to be a great story with amazing artwork btw. I'm immediately diving into the next act!

War Games is a major storyline comic book story arc published by DC Comics that ran in its Batman family of titles.

The plot revolves around a gang war involving all the major criminal groups in Gotham. It starts with one of Batman's most ambitious contingency plans for a possible outbreak of uncontrollable gang violence. Stephanie Brown as Robin accidentally created a clash between Gotham's underworld families, which erupts into a wave of chaos that engulfs the city. Batman must use every available asset: Oracle, Batgirl, Nightwing, Orpheus, Onyx, and Tarantula to preserve life and contain the chaos.

Devin Grayson, Andersen Gabrych, A. Lieberman, Bill Willingham, Dylan Horrocks, and Ed Brubaker are credited for writing the series and for the most part, I rather enjoyed the narrative. Some issues were better than others were, but overall it was somewhat well planned and written.

It is an interesting premise that has Batman as his criminal Matches Malone uniting all of Gotham Underground under his power, but fails miserably when it was initiated without his knowledge or consent. With so many pencilers, it is rather difficult to grade the overall artistic flow. For the most part this hodgepodge of pencilers has similar styles with few exceptions and that the flow of the artistic style flowed rather smoothly with a few sudden jerks.

Tim Drake is leading a normal life and Stephanie Brown has been fired leaving Gotham without a Robin. A solid start to the event. What I have really liked from these Batman events from the early s is that they do not revolve around the usual Rogue gallery and focus on lesser known villains as well as a rotating group of gang leaders and mob bosses.

The art is pretty solid throughout. A much more unique costume and an extremely interesting backstory. I prefer Babs as Oracle and Cassandra as Batgirl. Feb 06, Connor rated it liked it. Starts off strong, gets kind of same-y in the middle, but has a decent ending. Batman's ex-sidekick Spoiler invites all of Gotham's gangleaders to the docks in order to get in his good graces.

But they start killing each other and a gang war ensues. I liked that it jumped right into the action in the first issue, and that it introduced all the characters because I haven't read many Batman comics and didn't recognize all the characters.

But most of the book that follows is just Batman and his a Starts off strong, gets kind of same-y in the middle, but has a decent ending. Don't they get tired? I got a little tired just reading about them jumping from one frying pan into another and then another. It ends at a standoff at Tim Drake's one of many Robins in this book high school where a bunch of gangs have taken hostage.

Batman and co. Jan 02, Claire rated it really liked it. This is one of those complicated and almost political Batman plots. If you count mob and gang politics as political. There are a lot of players but it seems like a good start to this arc.

We got some really good Stephanie Brown moments in there. Steph is, in my opinion, criminally underrated so I jumped at the chance to see her motivations and how Batman has influenced her. I was a big fan of both the Nightwing which has absolutely spectacular art as always and Catwoman issues in this arc. My This is one of those complicated and almost political Batman plots.

My favorite part was definitely seeing how Tim is adjusting to being a civilian and how he steps up in a moment of crisis. Man I love Timothy Drake. Doc Thompkins is also spectacular.

Considering its mixed reviews, this story is a lot better than I feared it would be. For most of the book, the bats - who have been taken off guard by this - are scrambling to do damage control as violent reprisals and powergrabs become par for the course. This is a nice break from all the supernaturally themed batbooks I've been reading recently. How much more crime related do you get than a book about a gang war? I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series! May 29, Salimbol rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels , batman.

Not sure the exact day I finished so I just put it a day before Act 2. Good start but I got progressively distracted and disinterested in the story through the 3 Acts. Mar 07, tony dillard jr rated it it was amazing. A mysterious player calls the heads of all the major gangs of Gotham together. The purpose of the meeting is unsure. But in the end, several leaders and their hired muscle are dead. Now Gotham is in chaos as the surviving gang members seek vengeance for their fallen leaders.

It's the Batman's hope that he can end the hostilitie A mysterious player calls the heads of all the major gangs of Gotham together. It's the Batman's hope that he can end the hostilities by apprehending the mystery man who light the flame to this holocaust.

In the ultimate twist of fate and irony, the principle instigator in this gang war may very well be the Dark Knight himself! A great opening act that is so very well written. There's a ton of characters, twists, and turns that will leave you both guessing and on the edge of your seat.

Sep 03, John Wiswell rated it liked it. I read all three volumes of this hulk in one day, which attests to it being a quick read, but mostly to it being a compelling read. The gang warfare has just enough structure to satisfy while being too chaotic for anyone to pre-empt or stop, leaving the story to define the characters rather than the normal pedantic tales where Batman or one of his arch-villain plans everything.

The only substantial weaknesses are a few really unnecessary characters making some really unnecessary appearances Hush shows up three times just to remind us how tough he is , and that since this story crossed multiple comics the compilation has a different artist for every chapter. Already placed holds on the other 2 volumes and picking them up tomorrow. Honestly, is it the best writing I've read, or the best plot? But hey, I ain't bitter. It's definitely up there with the high hitters. If they'd stopped it when view spoiler [ we didn't know Tim was safe hide spoiler ]? That'd would've been downright cruel. What I write next will be entirely spoilers. So anyone who hasn't read the book and is reading this, don't click on it. You WILL regret it. Can he ever go back to being Robin and keep his secret identity safe?

I mean there's gonna be questions as to how he did all that. If they try to pass it off as a "not many people saw and most of what happened that day has been forgotten" I will call BS. I go to high school. NO ONE could forget that. Next question, will Tim even want to go back? I mean obviously he has to come back at some point. A person like Tim can stay away from that life for only so long before they get sick of watching the injustice from afar.

So I guess it's not a matter of if he will come back as opposed to when he will come back. After everything that happened, I would be downright terrified to face Batman. Overall, 4 stars. I felt the writing was okay, but there was quite a bit of writing I found myself skipping over because it was repeating the same things over and over and just got annoying.

But the fact that I will be twitching all night because I'll be pondering what happens next guarantees at least 4 stars. Mar 02, Zack K. This is the first comic book I have read in my life and I think they are really cool. I love Batman he is a super hero with no powers and still can do awesome.

This comic is a really good one but, what should I know it is my first. The comic book has great illustrations the drawings look very graphic. The characters in the book are very alike to the actual personality of the movie characters.

I like the book because it has action and mystery, my two favorite styles. There is not much to name in t This is the first comic book I have read in my life and I think they are really cool. There is not much to name in the book but it was a great first comic to read I loved it.

In the story many things are happening at once. Like one thing happens then the next page is something completely different! While i was reading, I could not believe the things that happened. It is about a gang war. A serious gang war is kind of intense. It made me pretty sad when I read about all the hurt people. I was thinking wow that all happened from gangs. That's a pretty bad showing for just a few gangs. The book has serious content that was really sad like interrogation and torture.

I had no idea a comic is so serious. I liked the book don't get me wrong, I hope I find the next comic and hope it's better. I like the book because it has many themes like action as an example. The book was pretty depressing at points but it also gets very exciting. I did not like the book because it had a lot of serious things, like wars for example. I hate war and death, I think its only upside is to show power with many downsides. Because of the switching between so many different comics series within the instalment, I would have expected some sort of clash with the art styles, especially seeing that the individual comics seem to depict very individualistic atmospheres, I think this was executed perfectly and have no complaints at all.

Extensive detail to both characters and scenery contributed to the overall atmosphere of War Games Book 1. While this all starts out with seemingly random and unrelated stories, these are actually the foundation of the War Games series. I would have much rather preferred a smoother introduction as I feel War Drums sole purpose was to be a convenient and fast introduction. The action scenes were okay, but it was the plot that readers were supposed to be paying attention to.

Leslie Thompkins goes missing, Gotham is becoming a deathtrap, and even a famous popstar vanishes. Most notably is that Time Drake steps down as Robin and is unexpectedly replaced with Stephanie Brown, aka the street vigilante, Spoiler. A pretty big event to just brush over, in my opinion — this little plot area turns out to be a major event later on in Volume 2.

I think the writing becomes much better as we enter Batman: War Games, Act 1, as I would expect from such a talented group of writers.

While it may seem like a bit of overkill among so many different writers all working on the same comic, I think that is actually what makes Batman War Games so great! One really cool thing about this instalment is that it is ultimately a crossover of so many different series within the Batman universe.

It really gives you a little bit of everything you look for in a comic because in a sense it brings many different worlds together. I was a bit skeptical that the changing between series and perspectives would be a bit too busy for my taste like with what happened during Knightfall, but I thoroughly enjoyed this style and it was easy to follow. My only real criticism of trying to give everyone their page time also took away from the plot line a bit.

The first few chapters of War Games: Book 1 feel like they are going kind of slow because they are mainly made up of showcasing the Bat family as they defeat your run of the mill criminals in a monotonous manner. What was clear, at least, was the overall storyline as writers failed to really stray from the main points even with switching characters -which was a big plus on their part.

For veterans, it was nice to get a comic that captured all of our favourite Batman characters and their prospective lives under a single binding.

For newer readers, I think this set-up is actually very good for you as it carefully introduces you to each of the different characters in a rather informative and organised way. Now I will say to people about to read the book, the stories may not seem to flow so clearly.
