Learn More. Lipopolysaccharide binding protein LBP is a plasma protein known to facilitate the diffusion of bacterial LPS endotoxin. These studies define a new function for LBP and sCD14 and describe a novel mechanism for the transfer of phospholipids in blood. Binding of one lipid is thus functionally coupled with the release of a second.
These results suggest that LBP acts as a lipid exchange protein. These references are in PubMed. This may not be the complete list of references from this article. Differences in the structure and function of BPI and LBP, as well as differences in their mobilization, permit highly sensitive pro-inflammatory responses to small numbers of bacteria at the onset of bacterial invasion and, later, efficient elimination of viable bacteria and their remnants and of endotoxin-driven inflammation.
